where do people on here get their home insurance?

looked at the company that advertise here but they didn't seem like that catered for the more humble abode.. what other insurance companies done balk at a house that is timber frame from the 1600's then brick clad from the 1820's? it's not an expensive or fancy house as houses go but seems to scare them as it doesn't quite match up to standard construction..

We had quotes from Hiscox...but ended up going through our bank.

We have no named insurer since it is a commercial-style cover which the corporate division of many high street banks can provide.

It may not be what you are looking for, but for the larger period prop, it can make much more sense than direct to an insurer....you can also specify exactly what cover you want and they tailor make a policy for you

I have heard good things about Hiscox from a friend that had to claim though.....they might be pricey, but the value becomes clear if you ever need to claim or repair any damage.

I was very disappointed with Hiscox when I tried to insure with them. They wanted to see the structural survey I had paid for when I bought the place then refused to insure it as it has had some structural movement in the past. What do they expect from a 200 year old building? :?

Now I'm with Norwich Union and they have been very reasonable, they are insisting that I fit window locks before the next renewal though

We use Direct line for a house very similar to yours (Timber frame and brick clad with render) and they have been very good during a recent flood which needed £6000 pounds of work shared between 3 houses.

They were good at sorting out people to lay new pipes etc, the only thing was the excess is quite high. Good price for the year as well.

NFU Mutual covered us with a thatched property, were very reasonable & fee's actually decreased over time. Now in a old non thatch property & have remained with them, very satisfied.

We use Playle-Russell for our insurance (350 year old thatched cottage) we did a lot of shopping around and found they came in cheaper than others - may be worth a quote. http://www.thatchline.com

We get all out insurace from Liverpool Victoria / Frizzel. Particularly good car insurance - not always cheapest but service from the company and quality of the product seems second to none for general cover.

You get a discount with them if you are a member of CSMA or RCN and probably more.

Experince says that Saga are not always the cheapest even if you are old enough to qualify. You can often get the best deals with them if they are cross quoting you for multiple insurance types.

It is a good idea to shop around.

We also use NFU Mutual. They offered the cheapest quote when we bought the house, but they had been insuring it for the last 50 years.

Our premium even went down by £150 this year!!!!!

One thing about the NFU was that during our recent flood my next door neighbour who had been with them for many years (over 80 by all accounts as he is now 104!!) was refused a payout on a bust pipe 6 inches outside his kitchen wall in his garden!

had to pay out of his pocket and is very unhappy, they gave him awful service but his premium was quite cheap so you get what you pay for I guess.
