When did planning permission come in?

Has anyone knowledge of when the need to apply for permission and submit building plans first came in? I thought of trying my county archives to see if they've got any records for my house (built 1899), but before I do I thought I'd ask the question here. If it was after 1899 then I'd guess my chances of finding anything are very slim.

1947 I think - under the Town and Country Planning Act,although there were prior T&CP Acts in 1909, 1919, 1925 and 1932.

Planning permission as we know it arrived with the 1947 Act.

I found the building plans for an 1880s extension on my house in the county records office (Northamptonshire). It wasn't in planning permission records, but in the early / pre-cursor to building regs equivalent, I think they were called Sanitary Acts or something like that. The records included the drawings for the extension and the rest of the house, plans and elevations.

Which must be why all the current assessments assume that pre-1948 is part of the "original" hosue in terms of volume and area calculations.

Thanks all. I finally managed to get the online search facility for my local archives to work - only reference to my road is for "slum clearance" in the 1940's!

Which I bet is where the hideous 60's flats about a mile down the road are now built. Exchanging 1 slum for another no doubt, although I expect that the original buildings could have been refurbished.
