The thoughtless introduction of wheely bins into our old streetscapes is a crime.
Fortunately, our lane is too narrow for the big refuse truck, so they have to send a pickup to collect our bin bags.
Our bag, needless to say, lives in a proper galvanised bin.

Surely the 'proper' period approach to waste disposal would be to burn and then bury all household waste? Galvanised dustbins and council collection are frightfully modern by comparison. :wink:

I do agree about the apparent profusion of wheely bins these days, though I'm not entirely sure why because while I clearly remember the old style dustbins of decades ago, I don't remember them ever cluttering up streets on 'bin day'. Selective memory perhaps? Or maybe it's because of our waste separation habits these days necessitating the need for up to three different bins in some places?

I had a major problem when they introduced wheelie bins. They "assessed" my property using google maps and decided to give me bins rather than bags because a Right of Way meant there was access from my garden to the street. What Google maps didn't show was the 2ft difference in height between my garden level and the ROW. I'm 69 (67 at the time) . These bins are about the same height as me. There was no way I was going to be able to get these behemoths on and off my land. I begged and pleaded for bags to no avail. I was allowed "assisted collection" instead. This meant that my bins were collected from the garden and technically put back there. In practice that didn't happen. They were dumped on the ROW much to the chagrin of my neighbours who used it.

After several months of complaints I finally got a result when I threatened to get out an injunction on the local council for persistantly blocking the ROW. They sent round a man with a clipboard. His take on this was that expecting the bin men to take my bins off my garden was a health and safety issue as they might hurt their backs. :shock:

So, they introduce bins that in my case are very, very OTT. And expect me to be able to lump them on and off my garden, which to be quite honest I could do at the moment , but I think age isn't on my side.

I won in the end and now have sacks in different colours which sit happily in my old galvanised bin until bin day. :mrgreen:

In the old days, when thngs were done proper, like, t'bins were never in t'street. T'binmen (no fancyficacious titles then, seethee) came to t'house and down t'side way and took t'bin and tipped it into t'truck and fetched it back. Mind you, me Mum did ave a constant tussle to get them to put t' lid back on, and not to mek a noise crashin t'bin around.

Why are they bright blue if just unrecyclable refuse? black would of blended in a bit better.

Here we have two large wheelie bins, green for food/garden, black for metal/plastic, then another two small wheelie bins, grey for unrecyclable, and blue for paper. Most people tend to leave them in the front garden/drive out of laziness, it does look unsightly.

In neighbouring Salford they have black wheelie bins with a 'hot pink' lid!

When wheely bins first came to our part of Norfolk they were all green in colour. Later on they introduced additional wheely bins for recyclable waste, which areblack. Then they introduced additional wheely bins for compostable waste, which are brown. So the only bins for non-recyclable waste are green. :roll: :lol:

That's because each house had one bin, and that probably wasn't full except at Christmas-time.

There was a lot less packaging, a lot less junk mail, newspapers were thinner, few or no disposable nappies, bottles had a penny on them to go back to the shop, no milk cartons/bottles as they went back to the dairy, old clothes got cut up for rags, etc.

Surely a private developer/landlord can't be allowed to keep bins on a public highway?
If there is no room within the property boundary how did the conversion get through planning?

Opposite my house are some small old terraced properties whose owners ALWAYS leave their bins on the public pavement. Never mind the PP, I just don't think that's on, but the District Council are appalling at enforcement.

A street near us (Princes Road) has terraced houses that open straight onto the pavement. They used to have lots of wheelie bins all over the pavement, until someone finally worked out to put 1100L bins in a timber enclosure that people shared every few houses along. Far neater, and safer.
