What's this...?

Does anyone know what the bricked-in box is in the following pics? It's possibly about 80 - 90 years old, about 1 foot square, goes nowhere, with nothing connected, by the old estate office door and covered with a tile and an old piece of broken harvester cutterbar knife!

The only thing I can think of might be a cigarette disposal point for people coming into (or waiting to come into) the estate office! Or maybe a water / damp trap? But I'm only guessing.

As a tall person, I need a hole for even taller people to stand in, as I'm not used to looking up. Surely short people are used to being looked down on, and looking up to tall people, and tall people are used to looking down on short people, so don't need a hole .

Your point is very fair, but who is to define tall or short? To a 5' person someone of 5'6" is tall.

Clearly it is a minefield and could easily cause offence, especially if you are a visiting French president with an inferiority complex about your height and a tall wife. The hole was obviously abandoned and hurredly covered over with the first thing to hand in order to avoid a diplomatic incident and an irreversible breakdown in the entente cordiale.

Is there a matching one on the other side of the door? If so, they may have dug this one to take the spoil from the digging of the other one? Or vice versa.

Ah, you need to be careful about that. A neighbour of mine had a similar experience.

He bought a large hole, loaded it on the back of his truck and set off for home. On the way he glanced in the rear-view mirror and saw to his horror that the hole had fallen off.

He quickly stopped and began reversing down the road - and he's never been seen since.

I've just checked and a hole does not form part of the curtilage of a property, so it's for sale.

Could it be some kind of a really rubbish soakaway? I had something a bit similar, far too small and far too close to the house to do any good, really just sending the water into the ground under the house, but a brick lined chamber a bit like that....
