Whats this in my fireplace/chimney?

So I've emptied out the last of my chimneys/fireplaces

I've got this small smoke stack/pipe/flue arrangement going on.



It had 2 bits of pipe going upto a shelf, inside the angled part/sump it just runs into brick/stone. what was it used for? There's a smoking/hanging bar further up. you can tell it was put in as an afterthought.

It wasn't much fun, took 12 hours none stop!

I'm afraid I don't really understand your explanation about the bits of pipe, so I can only make a generalised suggestion. Residual bits of metal flue pipe inside a large fireplace are often an indication that a solid fuel range cooker was once installed there - perhaps in Victorian times. This is a rather late example (possibly a repro) but it might have been something along these lines:-
