What's this? A moulding?

In amongst the old doors, windows, and guttering, stashed in a long-disused shed, was this.

Am I clutching at straws to hope it is some fancy moulding that used to grace the walls here? Would the location of the nails suggest it isn't a fragment of furniture? Can anyone pinpoint the era in which that kind of pattern was popular?

Of course it might just be that Mr P, who lived here before, picked it up off a skip. It was sandwiched between guttering sections though that were clearly once part of the cottage.

It's a lovely find. Goodness knows what it is, though. The rough old nails suggest that it was never part of a piece of furniture - although they might, of course, have been put in to use the carved panel for a non-original purpose.

I'm going to guess that it's part of a fireplace. Maybe one of the stiles of the surround.

I'm still here, but for once :roll: I don't have much to add - it's a piece of unprovenanced carved wood which might look nice displayed as a conversation piece. Could be part of almost anything - though unless you start finding a lot more bits of similar stuff, I'd be doubtful about tying it to your house as its origin.

Thank you! I won't get my local carpenter to copy it and slap it up as skirtings then. Not have much to add, what nonsense...

I think you'd find that that job would be somewhat above the paygrade of the average carpenter.

Unless you've got Grinling Gibbons knocking you up a staircase.

It does look like a victim. Maybe he didn't carve at all, just found some primitive plastic that looked like wood and poured it over real objects?
