What was this and what would you use it for?

Hi all

I'm hoping I've cracked the uploading images bit here!!

I recently bought this, sold as a table with 6 legs. However, I'm not so sure. One side is square edged, as though it's been butted up to something, and the other three sides are rounded off. The size of the slab is 78" x 33" and the 'legs' are 26" high. The slab is York stone but I'm not sure about the legs. But they just don't look right together somehow. Any ideas of what it might have been? And what would you use it for now?

Hi Frank, that's what I bought it for but having got it home I'm wondering if there's some other use for it, particularly as the pieces don't look right together. I've thought of having a wrought iron frame made for the slab, to turn it into a table but then I'm not sure what to do with the 'legs'. Any suggestion for those?

I reckon the top and the legs are not natural bedfellows. Marrying up such disparate items is often done in the antique/reclamation business.

As Nemesis suggests, the legs look like stone balusters. The top sounds as though it might have been a sideboard or shelf in a pantry or dairy - designed to be positioned against the wall. Stone or marble were used in such applications to help keep things cool.

I'm no expert - just amateur musings.

Use them as the start of a Build Your Own Folly kit. Have a poke around the local reclamation yards for other likely components, then construct a nice temple at the far end of your estate.

MdB - what's "inlining"? As you suggested, I see the temple picture in my post.

By the way, my attempt to post this picture was entirely trivial, so I suggest nobody bothers to try and get it.

Penners, inlining is when you use an image from someones website to appear in your (or someone else's) website. Whenever you download an image from a website (or anything else for that matter), it costs the website owner a small amount in bandwidth charges so it is generally considered rude to use someone else's server to supply the image to your website. It is also quite dangerous as the owner can change the image to something objectionalble once they see what is happening. It is a common problem so its easy to set the webserver up so that if someone inlines the image on another website then they don't get the image they were expecting and that is what the Gutenberg website has done.

Nemesis, my link failed to work as it should as I fell into the same trap as Penners did with his image. My link is a valid site on the Gutenberg website but they don't like it used outside of their site and it is redirected to the page you see (which is different from the original link). If you look at the first HTML download link (next to where it says "558 KB") then you will see that it is the same as the link I gave. If you click onto it from here, it will then take you to the HTML version of the book and you will find Penners image.

Thanks for the explanation MdB. I confess I always imagined that, if an image was capable of being "inlined" (I've got the jargon, see?!) then the publisher of the source website didn't mind this.

There are some websites that - if you try to right-click on an image - pop up a message saying "ooh err - don't do that, copyright image" or words to that effect.

I think it's a casket stand from a mauseleum. That's why it's a bit low for a table and the legs are so solid and important compared to the top. The top would have been covered during the funeral with a cloth.

But a mausoleum is where coffins end up (although not all...) not where the funeral takes place.

A chapel of rest possibly, but that wouldn't explain the asymmetric nature of the top.
