I’m in the process of trying to insulate a bedroom upstairs in a house I’ve only owned for a couple of months so I don’t know a great deal about the building.
I started to take some plaster off to take it back to the stonework to investigate the wall and discovered what I believe to be Newtonian lathe. It’s like bitumen soaked material. I’m having a bit sent off to check it’s not asbestos. I have already compromised this now in a small patch, but it looks like the stonework is dry underneath anyway. Seems odd to have it upstairs?
I’m sort of not sure what to do at this stage now. If it’s not asbestos do I remove it. Add the modern equivalent and just PIR board over that but ensure an air tight seal with foam. Do I remove it all and wood fibre board it? Do I repair the damage I did and wood fibre over it as is?
There are some wet patches that weren’t here when we viewed in summer but I feel like this is potentially condensation as it will be the coldest wall in the house as it is the only wall that’s not been boarded and retained the original features. If I peel back the wet lining paper it even seems to be dryer under that. And as I say the stone and plaster seems dry underneath.
The rest of the house is a mix of cavity walls and dot and dab potentially onto solid wall in the older downstairs part of the house.
Humidity seems to be pretty decent in the house hovering around 50-60%, certainly better than my 1930s bungalow was. This room is currently sat at 63% but it’s probably the coldest and is 11c currently (not being used just heated in the morning and then ventilated now and then when it’s not raining outside so far.
Thanks
