Hi
I'm looking for advice on how to finish an extension we've built.
We had previously removed the cement render from our cottage and pointed in lime the rubble walls ( which look superb! )
The extension at the back is a simple large brick built utility room, which at the moment has a scratch coat of cement on it.
Are there any drawbacks in not using lime rendering on the extension?
We are keen to finish, have used lime inside and out whenever possible, are running out of money and time.
Any help, including mixes, would be appreciated as always.

I would have thought that to lime render the whole wall (size?) would have much the same appearance as white paint, though more textured. i.e. very blank and boring!
What I would do is to randomly insert natural stone slips into your render. to break up the uniformity of it. It would very very pretty to line the corners/join to the main house so the pieces of stone to look like quoins.
What you are after are pieces of stone say 10mm thick with sizes of say 250+- X 300+- mm. Workout your design. Chalk their position on the wall, clean of any sticky-out bits of cement .Now you want to stick them on, and hold them in position until the "glue" goes off. Options = epoxy resin, polyester resin, prompt cement, portland cement with a little soft sand in it, say 2:1. Time = .5 - 30 Hrs, cost = ££££ - p. You spends yah money and you takes yah choice. Once these have been fixed on, render the wall with Sharp sand lime mix 2:1. Protect from wind and sun and rain for 3 days. Should look great!

Lime render would be less environmentally damaging than cement render and it would look nicer.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll render with cement and paint it white ( our neighbours wanted a whitey anyway )!

The joins onto the rubble wall? Is there something I should avoid or do when linking into the limed rubble walls?

I used lime render on a cement block boilerhouse with no problems. If you use lime then you don't need to worry about the joins (but do leave it until the risk of frost has passed).

I know I'm a bit dim, but I don't understand the reference to Michael Bliss, and Nemesis's remark about a resident troll.

It harks back to a thread a few weeks ago when someone objected to someone (was it me?) saying 'taking the piss' as being vulgar and/or 'taking' the Micky' as being racist. We established that the phrases are rhyming slang derived from a Northhumbrian gentleman by name Michael Bliss.

If there's already a scratch coat of cement on the extension, and (I'm assuming) it has a dpc in the walls that has continuity with an underfloor dpm, then I reckon you might as well go ahead with a cement topcoat. There's not much to be gained by using lime - other than Biff's perfectly valid observation about the environmental cost of cement manufacture.

Described exactly, I'm doing the cement thing for convenience ( although I will use Lime around the joins ).
I would have preferred the lime alternative, but we're running out of money and are way over time!! I also reckoned that cement had been used for the bricks etc.
So.....two rooms to do, painting only for one ( limewash ) and then, well
then the garden etc etc etc.
