I just moved in (last week) to a large, unique Victorian house built in 1900.
The living room has a massive fire place which has been painted with a marble effect (not nice) - the fireplace is not metal and appears to be wooden, though the shelf may be slate (or just with some hardened coating on it)
it's 49" high and the shelf is 64" long (both approx)
it has a kind of orb thing in the middle with some engraving round it
it is now a gas fire which has been capped off so at the moment unusable as a gas fire and as a coal/log fire but we want to get it up and running again.
i just want to make sure that the fireplace isn't some wooden original that's been painted badly and possibly a 60's/70's badly painted replica?
if it is an original i'd get it stripped/restored but i just don't think it's likely.
i've attempted to attach a picture or two so if you've got any ideas - please let me know?
very greatful for any responses - thanks
