What is this step

Hello All
What is this step as my next door neighbours is falling to bits so we both want to repalce them at the same time with the same looking step.

My guess is that it isn't a step at all, but a dividing wall that originally supported railings.

I'd suggest it's whatever the local stone of choice was. It looks very like the sandstone we have here - it starts off looking, well, sandy coloured (amazingly enough!) but goes grey over time.

What it is is more likely to be dictated by what was quarried in your area than anything else. Where are you?

A new lump of cut stone isn't cheap. 2 plain sawn sandstone cubes for hinge blocks for my gate piers came to about £200 from memory.

Have a look on Fleabay for stone cills or steps. I've been looking for a cill for a while - to replace the one that should be under my kitchen window (original sash window replaced with 1980's softwood casement tat and I found the original cill in pieces as part of a rockery :evil: )

There are quite a lot on there, I've just yet to find one the right size and design - for what you want you wouldn't have to be so choosy, as it's plain if you find something overlength then it would be easy enough to cut it down with an angle grinder. An upside down cill or lintel may do the job.

You might find an old lintol or perhaps a stone council kerb stone in a reclamation yard that would do the job. Whatever you choose, it will be heavy.
