What is it…?!
Dug up in our once farm yard, but from a pond only a few decades old. The village itself has had Roman finds and worked Saxon / Norman decorative stones found. Unsure about type of stone at this stage, certainly seems much harder than the local limestone / sandstone which the garden is full of.
It’s effectively a very small trough (see standard measuring shoe!) with a small drain hole through to the base, which also has a a channel carved out along its length. But obviously way too small for any animal usage, so I’m wondering about ecclesiastical.
Almost square, one face, presumably the front is better worked to a smooth finish and has a moulded lip at the bottom. Internally the vertical grooves can still be seen from working, and the inner surfaces haven’t been finished.
