I decided to go to Italy to enjoy my little spare time I had, total disaster, not only it Pi**ed down for most of the time the people there were as miserable as sin. Apparently they all blame Berlusconi for removing the rubbish which was accumulating all over the south of Italy. One chap there commented that that part of Italy has been living amongst rubbish for 500 years now they don't know how to cope without it. :wink:

Anyway, up there near the Arctic Circle you'll get no daylight between November and March, so light a candle, throw some peat on the fire and enjoy some spare time then.

Penners, I tremble at the thought of getting into a debate on semantics with an arch pedant (why does that term sound like an architectural term for some sort of footing?). However, since my "enthusiasm" for my decrepit old house is amateur rather than professional, the time that I have for any sort of work on it is, by definition, my spare time! I guess that also by definition as soon as you do something with that time it is no longer spare!
I do have plans, however, to follow your excellent advice for the period between November and March. Sadly burning peat is no longer politically correct and Leylandii logs don't quite provide the same ambience. Also the current financial climate dictates that Ardbeg (this Forum's tipple of choice) has to be replaced by a supermarket branded equivalent. However, the greatest risk is that the memsahib will point out that there is now no excuse not to get on with all the inside work!

Interestingly (or perhaps not!) I was once chided as being a skellum at a check-in desk in South Africa - the Afrikaans word having the same meaning and same derivation as the old Scots and coming from the old germanic word that is now schelm (an imp, rogue or prankster) in modern Dutch and German.

Try this instead, it slides down lovely.
Blackberry Brandy.
Use 500g of blackberries and half that amount of sugar.
Mix into 1ltr of brandy. (cheap stuff will do)
Store and “swirl” everyday for the first week.
After the first week, “swirl” once per week from Sept to Christmas.
Strain and store (in the brandy bottle)
It's better if you leave it longer.
Try this instead, it slides down lovely.
