Now that everyone's got the frivolity out of their systems, Graham, perhaps someone will give you a sensible answer.

Just one observation, though - that lintel looks like one piece of stone. Is it? If so, it's a hell of a big one for a pretty modest sized fireplace. Is there any sign that the stack has been reduced in size at some time?

It is one big piece of sandstone, we discussed it earlier when I questioned how to clean up the dreadful hacking away of it to bond the plaster.

The fireplace used to be big and square, you can just make it out from my picture. We intend to only open up the small arched section and fit a small woodburner.

The kitchen chimney runs alongside it and use to open up to a beautiful spiral stack, but as it became unsafe, the previous owner rebuilt it in nice new brick and straight. There are some nice sandstone blocks remaining in the lower section though, which the CO noted as important and rare.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I'm rather pleased with this which was completed in my project today:

The sides are original, and what we believe to be 16th/17thC whilst the top is clearly new stone we had carved. Not quite a perfrect colour match, but I am very pleased. Whoever did the 1970's "modernisation" to my 16th/17thC Welsh farmhouse removed the original mantle and replaced it with a railway sleeper and some very unattractive brick rubble pillars - and then covered the whole thing in fake brick plasterboard. I was delighted to find at least the pillars were still there.

Directly above this fireplace is another one, which is all original:



A little but of movement has occured when I replaced a structural beam, but some repointing (lime of course) will soon make good. Just waiting until the major settlement has taken place.

Would anyone be interested in more photos of the ongoing project?

I'm interested to see more pics, having just spent several weeks rebuilding my own butchered fireplaces. Please do start a new thread and show us more!!!!

Ok - Ian, will do over this weekend.

The project so far has involved ripping out the plasterboard dry-lining, tanking and fake beams from the lounge & dining room and restoring the original features. I have about 300 photos covering every inch over the past 6 months of work, but will pick a few that show the story to date.
