All accomplished safely, and it didn't rain!
Unfortunately most of the available floor space is occupied by one hundred and thirty seven huge storage boxes, each one of which has to be opened so as to remove the essential things we'll need while the poor house is being rescued. I just hope a local firm will be able to come and cart them off fairly soon.

When do you start tackling all the major jobs?

My most recent memory of moving and unpacking was helping my Dad move and being trapped in the tiny kitchen by about 20 boxes of kitchen stuff, trying desperately to unpack them so the removals men would take the boxes away. In the middle of this frenetic activity, my brother was calling out 'I'll have a cup of tea when you're ready'. He was sitting down and putting a towel rail together in a leisurely fashion...

Congratulations Moo, the planning before you move and the actual packing up I think is the most difficult part. Once you're into a new place and can start doing then it feels like steps in the right direction. I can so sympathise on the boxes. Last summer I had a bunch of things delivered out of storage and it seemed like there wasn't an inch to move. Mind you a lot of that had to go straight to the tip, the charity shop or on to my friend that had just bought. You won't forget how much we like pictures will you.

This morning we're setting off for a wedding in a romantic rural (and wet!) place in Kent, and I've failed to find the essential pair of shoes. I know they must be in one of the boxes, but I've only been able to examine the contents of about eighty of them so far, and there are another fifty buried somewhere in the stacks!

What a shame you didn't post about your shoe problem earlier, there is only one solution to lost or missing footwear, replacement footwear! In the time it takes to open 80 boxes you could have been up to Harvey Nix and back :lol:

Correct as always Mr P, but of course you are working on the assumption that the boxes were not packed and labelled by the person who works at this auction house. I fear there is every chance that should Moo track down the box clearly marked "cased hallmarked fish server set" she will find.........

:lol: Good logical guess, but sorry, no cigar for you today Mr Hughes. That is my local auction, well it is when I'm in London, and they list every week, so I check what's on offer out of interest. It was just very amusing that they had messed up the listing of the fish server set this week, right after the discussion here.

Never mind the boxes - I think I've discovered something really exciting!!!!

Well, this morning, having found a working torch, I went and investigated the apertures that you can see on the right hand side, and I think it will be possible to extend the cellar across the whole width of the house!!!!!!!
I took some photos but as I can't find the little cable that connects the 'phone to the computer, I'll try to describe what I think we can do:

Beneath the ground floor joists there's a couple of feet of air-space, then about 4ft of soil. Brick pillars support the joists, and I'm assuming they go down below the visible surface - if they don't, we could replace them with Acrows as we work our way across, removing the soil.
Then it should be a matter of putting in permanent supports, a decent breathable floor, some plumbing and lighting, and we'd have the equivalent of our lovely Norwich cellar!!!!!!

whooo hooo sounds good--I will leave the technical advice to those with experience of such things, but surely 'where there is a will there is a way'! It create some useful space for the vintage wines and the fish slice of course.
