My mate has the job of testing the emergency sluice gates on some canals. He sends a letter to the local farmer (who's duty it is to make sure that the ditches are up to standard and not blocked) and then opens the sluice for a few hours to see what happens a couple of weeks later. Apparently he is quite good at flooding the local fields....

I've been across the Pontcysyllte on a couple of occasions, while taking narrowboat holidays on my favourite canal - the Llangollen.

The lad who's shown playing the antithesis of the Little Dutch Boy is standing on the towpath, which runs up one side of the iron "ditch". On the other side, however, there's just a narrow edge to the iron sections, then... nothing between you and the river, about 80 feet below!

It's not a comfortable feeling for a chap who gets dizzy changing a lightbulb.

I also thought 'big river' and the Thames.

An old friend of mine built himself a narrowboat. He bought what he described as a 60 foot bath and then did everything else himself. He kept it (mainly) on the Grand Union canal and it was once featured in an episode of Inspector Morse; the one where they fished a body out of a canal, if there are any afficionados out there.

I don't even like driving across the Severn Bridge. If I had to get a boat across Pontcysyllte I'd get someone else to take it over, and walk round the long way

It is the Thames and it is quite close to where a very large poster of Henry VIII was displayed on the side of a rather famous building for a while - might be still there, I haven't been past recently to check.

For some reason my wife and myself have (been) volunteered to take the boat up North as apparently that is where most narrow boat sales occur. 100 miles of cruising, 100 locks, in March... Should be rather cold fun
