I wrote a while ago in a message called "what's above the inglenook?" (in our C17 farmhouse) Well today we finally found the chimney today in the bedroom above the inglenook - very exciting! So now the questions is - what should we put in for a fireplace?
There is no lintel left (and no hearth that we have found yet, although we haven't excavated quite down to floor level yet) so it's not obvious how tall the opening was for the fireplace or what kind of fireplace used to be there. From some internet research, we are guessing that originally there was a stone fireplace with timber lintel (like the inglenook downstairs) and that this was later replaced with a cast iron black register grate (see link).
As we have the major inglenook feature downstairs, I'm not sure about putting a more modern register grate upstairs. But I can see that a register grate would be more bedroom-like and more practical.
Any thoughts on which direction to go?
The fireplace opening is about 110 cm though the chimney itself is only about 65cm.
