You certainly should be able to limewash it. No problem there, I wouldn't have thought.
How thick is the wall, out of interest? It certainly looks to be in excellent condition from the photo.
Personally, if all were good to go and there were no defects requiring attention, I'd probably give it several coats of thin limewash (lime-water, effectively) to consolidate it, and then maybe look at a suitably coloured claypaint. Others may have different theories.
