An older neighbour of mine just popped in for a cup of tea, and assured us that mains water wasn't available in our village till the early 1970s. He correctly identified the dry patch in our lawn as being the village well, and explained that as a boy he'd come here to get water.
But surely this can't be true? I honestly can't believe that people didn't have mains water till the 1970s. He is a bit of a kidder, telling us that the post the village sign is on used to be a gallows, when it fact the sign says it was taken from the local mill, etc.
So is he right? Or is he havin us on?
Sadly the well has been capped with concrete, would be nice to uncover it though.....
