water in the cellar

Our former vicarage c1790 now a grade II B&B, has a cellar which constantly fills with water. The water we believe is coming from a well which is situated just a few feet from the back wall of the property. I have a submersible pump which easily copes with the water level, but clearly I would like to stop the water from entering the house if possible. Can anyone suggest how this could be achieved, and roughly at what cost? The cellar is approx 16’ x 9’ with a ceiling height of 7’.

Easy, find where is coming from and put a plug in it !!.

On a more serious note, you have to ascertain, or get someone to do it, as to how the water is gaining entry into the cellar and then decide what is the best action to take.

My sister in law's neighbour has a stream (well very small but amazing to see in a house) flowing through hers. Can't remember what Paul Hopper called it, but it is due to the water table levels.
To get rid of this I would have thought it would mean either diverting it or digging down and laying pipes.

As has been said, you need to find out where it is coming from if it's not just the water table level and then decide how best to stop it.

Or make it a talking-point - channelled along a tasteful culvert, with clever lighting it would make an unusual indoor water-feature.

Do you realise how much money people pay for indoor swimming pools?! :wink:

A sump would be the simplest option. A small hole in the floor with pump sat in it, it pumps out before the water level gets up to floor level. Common in the US.

Appreciate the suggestions everyone - and yes, we've already done the swiming pool idea, and the 'why don't you bottle it and sell it' idea, etc. The sump idea sounds like a cost effective approach, and worth a try.
