Water Damage to Grade ll listed property

I am about to start repair work on a Grade ll listed property in South Wales after a burst water tank has caused damage and a lot of adjacent water staining. The Principle Room is having a new ceiling and cornice put up in the traditional manner by a specialist company.

I am working to a spec to redecorate two other rooms using stain block and finish with ‘Farrow and Ball’ paints, is there any particular type of fillers, stain blocks that I should use or will the usual trade products suffice ……… I have been instructed to use 1000 / 1500 grade lining paper to walls and ceilings before painting. (owners request and like for like) ...:!: :?:

I believe the usual diy/trade fillers are lime and chalk, so will fit in perfectly.

I've never found stain blocks to be much use really - I find a coat of oil undercoat better, but none of it will aid the walls breathing if used in large amounts.

Paper - fine - we have ours papered then painted. Hides all manner of things... but some people are finding F and B not as good as it used to be. Rose of Jericho also does a good traditional paint range which is worth considering.

Whereas I find the best-known brand (parrot's prison) very effective.

In my experience no!..... I fear the dampness from paste and paint tend to 'wet up' the stain and the sudsequent drying 'draws' the stain to the surface again........my theory may be wrong, but in any case in the past, without stain block the stains always seems to come back....

I agree with rayal - stains will eventually soak through lining paper.

Yes, they soak through anything!

Certainly a block is needed.

Yes, that is good advice. I have found that the stain must be dried out completely before application for it to work long-term.

I'm one of those people.
The F & B emulsion has always been average but their oil paints 15 years ago were just like the real thing.
Compared to Dulux it was cheaper and a sheer joy to paint with, Dulux was sticking, drippy and thin.
However they are now quite expensive and just not the same paint.
The earlier F & B paints were full of pigment but now they begin to resemble the old Dulux.

Yes it is (was) mould aspergilligus niger black spot fungus......it's a surface mould growth that mainly affects decorations rather than the substrates, it's more commonly associated with condensation problems, but rears it's ugly head when excessive moisture its trapped behind wallpapers etc, as in this case. Once dried out an antifungicidal wash or bleach usually kills it off............(I'll stop there else I'll ramble on about causes and cures etc)....

No, I just wondered - our walls used to be black from bitumen paper. Grrr.

Looks like a DPC has been done too... but we won't go there.


Not much use if it's coming from above.
