I've noticed that lots of period properties have a fair amount of ground floor wall panelling. Will this compromise the breathability of the wall? I'm considering adding some to the dining room. The Earthborne white clay is proving impossible to keep clean with a pointer and dane mooching around.

what age house is this, have you got a slate DPC?
Hi Lacan07, I've changed my avatar to show the house and also included the photo here for size. The farmhouse (top part) is 1820. The cottage part is 1641. I'm not sure on a slate DPC, I never noticed one so perhaps not. The dining room is the room to the right of the porch. Internally it dips a little below ground level.
It’s possible to fit wainscotting by battening it out from the wall using vertical battens and then venting behind it if you are concerned about damp - I and others have done so in here so worth a root about in the search function for threads like this one (although maybe disregard the random segues into fish suppers etc that appeared along the way in that particular discussion)
