Wall lights

Hello,
I need to buy two converted, old gas wall lights. Small ones to go in tight spaces. Please does anyone have any suggestions where to get them or is it a case of trying the local antique shops. I live on the Devon/Somerset/Dorset borders. Many thanks, V

Ebay is well worth hunting through - otherwise it's just a case of getting lucky...

Worth a quick look at Amazon. Search for vintage wall lights and there are some cheap and cheerful replicas if you can cope with that sort of thing.

I looked for a while, and even converted an old oil standard lamp to electrickery, but in the end for convenience and cost I went for a few repro fittings for the main lights. I'm not sure if I used this shop but it was some fittings made by this company which are very nicely made.

I remember looking at Stiffkey lighting for the real deal. Nice but quite expensive. They do repro stuff too. I'm sure there are others.

I've not seen any anywhere but I'd suggest trying the antique places in the car park behind Waitrose in Bridport, Busby's Reclaimation at Donyatt, Phillips & Skinner in Bruton, the antique shops in Honiton or if you've got cash to burn http://www.antiquelightingcompany.com in Exeter!

Ebay is awash with antique light fittings, both genuine and converted. That's been the source of nearly all our fittings, here and in our previous house.

Just make sure when you install them that they have a good earth.

The other thing to watch with gas fittings, is that they often used to swivel. Which is fine with gas, but not so good when there is a thin electric cable through the middle.
We had a gas fitting on the wall of our downstairs loo. I found the fitting under a set of drawers in the house, and converted it. I Araldited the elements of the swivel together so it couldn't move. Was still there when we sold the house.

Small and clear glass so with a LED filament bulb would stand out as a feature. There are aluminium and bronze in the same style too.
