Victorian window glass replacement

Hi,

any suggestions on where to get some replacement glass for my front door, it's a Victorian house and has a stained glass front door, it's a simple pattern, it looks like a Battenberg Cake, pink and yellow cubes. The glass, on the inside has a rough, sort of pimply, quite raised surface and smooth on the front.


any ideas would be much appreciated

http://www.yell.com look under Glass Merchants - Wholesale & Retail and Glaziers; Glaziers' Supplies. Phone up the nearest and ask them for who supplies coloured glass in the area.

Local to me there is a place in Truro and a place in Newquay so there are a fair few suppliers around and should be able to find someone local. Be warned though, coloured glass can be very expensive.

edit - oh and of course, being used for a door, the glass should be toughened (which of course may not be an option for the coloured type....). I would however go for a the thickest matching glass you can find. If the current stuff is only 1 to 2mm thick, I would look to replace it with 3mm to 4mm just to be that much stronger.

I think it only has to be toughened if its over a certain size.

Approved Doc N is what you want.

For doors it is below 1500mm that needs to be safety glass. Size wise you can get away with normal glass 6mm thick if it is less than 250mm wide and 0.5mm^2 in area. Thickness can be further reduced to 4mm in lead work.

If you are just repairing the old window then Part N might not apply and you can carry on living dangerously will thin, weak glass. Find the nearest stained glass crafts-person.
