victorian tiled hall

Just ripped up old carpet and found Bailee-scot (original architect) tiled hall -- paint and sticky tape marked. Needs good clean but also some restoration. Don't mind the cleaning but the filling in and maybe some replacememt tiles might be too expensive. If it is I will proceed with laminate boards! :roll: :?:

If it is pressing that you must get on with life and have no time or funds to carry out a good restoration on the floor tiles, make sure you keep a record of exactly what sort of tiles you need and cover what you have found with anything you fancy for the moment.

It will give you time to find what you need for your little restoration project in the future.

Just take care not to make any further damage.

Middi has given you excellent advice. Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott was an important architect (see http://www.gov.im/mnh/heritage/library/bibliographies/bailliescott.xml).

If you haven't the time or resources to restore the floor properly, then please just cover it up with a laminate floor. Whatever you do, don't use a glue-down type - just one of the many click together systems that have a thin sheet of foam underneath them, and no mechanical fixing. If you need to level off any gaps in the tiles, please use loose (ie: unglued) bits of any old tile that can just be lifted out again. All you need under a laminate floor is a reasonably flat and level surface - small gaps don't matter.

That way, either you (at a later date) or some future occupant of the house, can remove the laminate and restore the Baillie Scott floor properly.
