Hi there! First time posting here.
Just hoping others with experience in old houses (ours is a grade II listed victorian from the 1870s) might have an insight into something we’re looking into.
The room in question is on the lower ground floor (beneath ground floor on road side, but is on ground floor at the back) I believe used to be a cold store. It has a small coal chute.
There’s an arch feature directly underneath the fireplace in the living room upstairs - we’re just not sure if this is evidence of a fireplace, or just a shelf feature / part of the cold store.
We knocked a couple of bricks out (with permission from council officer), and it appears to be filled with random stones… but I don’t think it’s wall masonry?
Question is, how likely is it that if we were to keep digging past the stone, we’d find a chimney opening? It’s an end of terrace, and this wall is adjoining to our neighbour (he does not have a fireplace here that I can see).
The soil is moist, which someone has suggested could either indicate airflow, but could also be rising damp.
It’s our first house, so not exactly sure if all of this information and images are enough to draw a conclusion without further digging!
The goal would be to install a log burner in this nook.
Appreciate any advice.
