Victorian Fireplace

Hi all,

Just uncovered this in our kitchen in our Victorian house.

Anyone seen anything similar? It's much taller than I was expecting...

I think that PP may be right, although your tall, thin fireplace looks considerably smaller than his illustration.

Nevertheless, I suspect that there may originally have been a small range in there, and that it was later removed and the chimney modified to accommodate the small fireplace.

what happens when you pull the two handles at the bottom?!! it looks like another arch above this area?? what is behind...
