Victorian/Edwardian foundations ?

Whilst recently digging a french drain for my property, built 1904/5, I came across a layer of bricks which stick out about 3"/75mm further than the base of the wall. Is this the foundation? I dont want to dig deeper than this if it is !!

Not sure when concrete strip foundations became the norm but prior to this stepped brick foundations were the norm. You need to exercise caution when digging any trench that is paralell and close to a wall. Mike.

Sounds very much like it, yeah. IIUC that would be the bottom of the foundations. So now you know how deep/shallow they are.
