I believe one can now buy "very warm" low energy light bulbs with a 2,500 Kelvin rating. Does anyone have experience with these? I need a 60w or 100w equivalent in a bayonet fitting.

Well, as nobody else has replied yet, I'll chip in with a "No, I haven't, ... but".
I use lots of these Philips Genie 2700k bulbs specifically because I find them to be a particularly pleasant warm colour light. I know that 2700k should be 2700k from any manufacturer, but for some reason I do find these to be a nicer quality of light than many others that I've tried.
If you do try them, then please be aware that they are very dim just the first time you ever use a new one, but after a few hours use they get much better. They are available with all base types and several different power ratings.

9W led GU10 warm white for less than £3 each and an output that is similar to the 50W halogen in a neighbouring socket.
It will be interesting to see what the lifetime is - the CFL GU10s they are replacing lasted about 4 years.
LED lighting is now sensible.

Instant-on with no perceptible warm up time. I bought the cool white ones at first and they were horrible! I replaced them with warm white and they are fine. They have a 14 day money-back offer so you could always try them out and see what you think.

I'm just a teeny bit sceptical about that particular supplier. They say the bulbs are 7 watt, then in the blurb it says "They consume only 5 watts of electricity to run..."
So the 7 watt LED lamps are 5 watt LED lamps?
They also run down other suppliers' bulbs - "Many LED lights simply do not deliver. They say they will last 50,000 hours, but they fizz out after less than 10,000 hours. They say they are ‘super bright’ but they are dim compared to the halogens they replace."
My experience with LEDs is that they either pack up within a few days, or go on pretty much forever. The LED indicators on some of my electronic kit were installed over 30 years ago and have been shining happily ever since.
Their price is a tad high, too, at £17.47. I paid £9 each for Philips 7 watt warm white LEDs from the South American River Company. Toshiba ones are cheaper than that.

LED lifetime depends on temperature. Indicator LEDs don't get warm so last forever. LED lighting can get very warm and early parts suffered from very short life spans because of this. Heat sink tech has improved (my GU10s are basically all heatsink) and hence so has lifespan but you want to be careful not to mount them somewhere where the heat can't escape.Keithj said:

These bulbs do have a very large aluminium heat sink in their base. As to comparison with other brands - no idea, not tried any! I'm just impressed that they come on to near-full brightness instantly and give a decent bright light, they are defintely the closest thing I've seen to "normal" filament lightbulbs in use, but of course with much lower power consumption. A real step forward from CFL energy-saving bulbs in my opinion - I really don't like how long they take to warm up.

I'm still looking for a 'modern' replacement with standard-size glass, pearl or opal, to take clip-on shades. I bought some so-called 40W halogens

which are nearly the right size. The light is not too cold but the output isn't what's claimed - visibly dimmer than a genuine 40W bulb.

I'll try one. Judging by appearance, they may have the problem of so many modern bulbs, that the bottom half is dark, and so they look quite wrong in period light fittings.

The light output is over an arc of about 120°. You can see the "bars" of the LEDs inside if you look straight at them. They would be absolutely fine in most ceiling light fittings where the light comes straight down.

My conclusion is: not for anything where the light needs to come out in all directions (such as a table lamp)
However, I have another sort: candle bulbs, with some sort of device in the middle. Watch this space...

The candle ones have a diffuser device in the middle which scatters the light in (pretty much) all directions - you can see it here. It looks like a flattened diamond, about half way between the tip and the metal skirt:
The result is a much more useful omnidirectional light output - witness the boss's bedside light with one fitted. I'm not going to tell her, and see if she notices:

Toshiba one just arrived. It looks much more robust than the cheaper ones, and has a good sized metal heatsink on the neck. The light is more uniform, and a pleasant warm white: if anything, warmer than a tungsten filament and a fair bit warmer than halogen. I could see these in all our ceiling lights.

I managed to buy two "rough duty" incandescent frosted bulbs this morning at a DIY shop near home. These are pretty much identical to the normal ones which the EU banned. As tested this evening on the lamps with my homemade yellow shades they look so much better than the energy saving ones. I am still open to the idea of replacing them with low energy, but only when the right ones are available.

Yes, funny that those rough duty lamps are still available. I find though that they blow just as easily as the standard ones!
