Venetian Plastering with Lime

Hi All

I am tinkering with the idea of Venetian plastering. As an advocator of lime plastering in my old wreck of a mill I was wondering if anybody has tackled this. Any good courses recommended. Also will the marble in the Lime effect breath-ability ?

I would have thought that kind of plaster composition is not the type which would have been used or complement an old mill, I am sure it will look majestic if you prefer that sort of thing.

I don't have much knowledge about it , I only get the odd occasion to admire the 21st C. replica of it on the walls of the Italian restaurant I sometime frequent, complemented by a fresco of the " canal grande", Gondola's etc....Then think , "I wonder if that would look well in an 18thC. mill" . NO

Thank you for your response , but I think I will be the judge of what decorative design compliments my home. My question is in relation to courses and or breath-ability. I'm sure you feel you have a valid point, but really , would you suggest I take it back to the brick work and light the inside with candles ?

Mike wye in devon has DVDs about these types of finishing and Also Goldtrowel in Essex do proper courses, I have never been on one but have met site brickies how have used them and also the Army use them for Retraining and pre relese courses to blokes who are getting out.

I have seen this finish on a few bathrooms and if done well can look very nice you can be brave with colours and the whole world will not be Magnolia or white.

Of course you are absolutely right Moreteyne that you should decide the decor of your home, and Venetian plastering finish is quite beatifull , but.

As you mentioned " wreck of a mill", the immediate picture which apppeared in my mind was a traditional wind or water mill in a picturesque setting, neglected and in need of lots of TLC.

It occurred to me to you may just be absolutely wrong in the choise of decor or historically correct, only as far as the mill is concerned from a conservation point of view.

Biff , how right you are, a lovely rich polished round room complemented by a hand grafted oak window with mouth blown glass sounds ideal to me.
