Varnish

Hello All
I have put in a new lovely relclaimed floor in my living room and 1/2 put it into my 2nd reception room.
i originally used wax on the floor in the living room and after my crazy xspringer spaniel has his running fits i have decided it will be best to varnish the floor to protect it from his claws and people walking in and out of the hallway.

I want something not to shiney and that will protect the floor, any Ideas?
Am i going in the right direction with Varnish?

Osmo Polyx is what you want. Expensive per can but each can goes a very long way so it works out about the same as other stuff.

We have had ours down now for a couple of years and it still looks great.

Put slippers on the dog's feet then...

You will always get some marking on a wooden floor if you allow people/pets to walk over it. Personally we don't worry about it.

My guess is that your pet would cause similar damage to any sort of hard shiny varnish eventually, and it would be much more difficult to re-do that than the Osmo you have at the moment. So I also vote for slippers on the dog, :lol:

Varnish is the work of the devil. Personally I think there's nothing nicer than proper wax ( I use Liberon wood floor wax) buffed every couple of days with the bristles on the Miele vacuum and reapplied every year with a rag and then buffed with a Karcher buffer.

I agree, wax in this situation is best.
Not only does it protect the wood and is easy to polish but also lessens the damage claws can do by providing a lubrication between wood and claw.
Perhaps the dog's claws could be filed/trimmed?
... It depends on how much the dog walks/runs/races around on hard surfaces outside.

Absolutely. Especially that stuff which "does what it says on the tin". If you actually read the tin, you discover that it's guaranteed only for some short period of time. The question is "what do you do then when it starts peeling?" but of course the tin doesn't tell you. The only sensible answer is to strip it (with difficulty) and use something else next time!

sorry i just checked and its not Osmo i have i went for the blanchon hard wax oil, woudl the Osmo be a better option?
Maybe the scratch marks i have are in the wax then rather than the wood.

Are your boards pine or something harder? Our boards are oak (+ Osmo) and our dogs run over them all the time without any major scratch marks. Modern fast grown pine (wide growth rings) would be a lot softer and I can see that getting marked quickly whatever you put on it. Your reclaimed stuff is likely to be older and better quality though.

I'd be amazed if one hard wax oil was substantially more durable than the other but I claim no expertise.
However there are signs of wear after 3 years in some of the most heavily trafficked areas on my wooden floors which will require a recoat soon.
Sorry no dogs here to give an indication of wear on Osmo.
Have your floors been showing wear recently or from day one?
