Oh dear! Amazing that it stood firm for nigh on 150 years, and then suddenly... bang!

Being cast iron, I suppose its brittleness was its final undoing. What a shame.

I must remember to bring my light house in when the weather is bad!!

Sadly as the origional is so badly damaged I guess it will be replaced by a galvanised steel structure, although it would be nice to think they could replace it with another sweetly designed beauty with less inherent weakness.

I'd say 150 years standing completely exposed in everything the British weather could throw at it is the very antipathy of inherent weakness?

Well, I'm not so sure about that. 150 years is a very respectable tour of duty, yes, but if it had been made of steel it might be standing yet.

Sadly my experience of cast iron is that it is tolerant of many things thrown at it but the moment a stress fracture appears it rapidly spreads which is what I refer to and I suspect the cause of failure.
