Used carpet to protect solid floor

Hello
I want to get a used cheap or free carpet so put down on my hard wood floor when we have people over for drinks and end up dancing.
Where can I get a carpet for free that is only used now and the and rolled up when not needed and put away.

Any ideas ?

definitely freecycle, i've gotten several carpets from there. one of them was fairly grotty so i borrowed a Vax and it came up a treat. i have also bought carpet, as in for a fitted carpet not a rug, at markets before, seen it at a few places, they sell the ends of rolls of synthetic stuff very cheaply - if memory serves I bought a roughly 3x4 meter piece of new carpet for about £15.

Not free, but we got a carpet for our tent pretty cheaply from amazon. Waterproof backing, very light and rolls up into a nice compact bag. Might be worth looking at as would be perfect for your needs. Think it was about £30 from memory

Light and much smaller to store. It would need securing to the floor - but I doubt that is impossible.

I thought you took carpets up for dancing? Or does it depend on the type of dancing? Can't imagine doing an enthusiastic "strip the willow" on a carpeted floor, without it ending in grief!*

My floor is a reclaimed wood floor and covering it is best considering women wear heels and leave stud marks everywhere.
I will read about a camping carpet.

I contacted a few friend who are carpet fitters to see if they have anything they will get rid of this week.

Why not fasten small offcuts of carpet to the shoes of each guest as they arrive, that way your lovely floor is on show and they can't damage it with their selfish shoe choices!

In Russia in almost all homes everyone takes of his or her shoes. The host has a large collection of slippers to be borrowed, so you get the funny juxtaposition of beautiful women dressed to the nines and wearing old tartan slippers. But at least the floors stay clean and undamaged!

In Russia in almost all homes everyone takes of his or her shoes. The host has a large collection of slippers to be borrowed, so you get the funny juxtaposition of beautiful women dressed to the nines and wearing old tartan slippers. But at least the floors stay clean and undamaged!

Most of Asia works the same way. Its very ingrained in people that you just do not wear shoes inside anyones house. His Lordship once had cause to remind a posse of Thai soldiers with automatic weapons that they needed to remove their big army boots before they pushed their way into our apartment for some surveilance duties. This gave them a problem because they didn't really want to do that, but couldn't get past their anti shoe conditioning. In the end they opted to go away and just hope that there were no assassins hiding on our balcony.

brilliant! :lol: I never had soldiers pushing in, but the moscow paramedics did take their shoes off before coming in - luckily the call wasn't life threatening.

Presumably, once they had spotted you didn't have a pair of assassins' shoes placed neatly outside your front door, they knew you weren't hiding anyone on th balcony. :wink:
