The scaffold is up and the roofers are here ready to re slate my roof. Some time in the distant pass the existing old slates were unfortunately covered in some kind of Hessian and bitumen, I think they call it ‘turnerised’ or ‘tannerised’ or perhaps ‘terrorised’ which all now looks a bit flaky in parts. I think this was probably done as a cheap option to prevent slipping slates and to give the roof a few more years of life. Now that these slates are being taken off, we’ve discovered that the underside on a large proportion of the slates doesn’t look too bad, however some are a tiny bit flaky here and there not to mentioned stained from the lime torching etc. Would it be wise to simply reuse these slates by turning them over to the good side?

My opinon not having done it or seen the slates would be to say yes to the ones which are sound.
After all, if you go to a reclamation yard to buy some more, what state are they going to be in, what's been done to them in the past?

I’ve had a further look at these old slates and whilst a good few of them do have a good “ding”sound, I am now of the opinion that they may be more trouble than their worth. The “tanerisation” if that’s the correct term (bitumen and Hessian) doesn’t come off that easily. I’ve tried scrapping it off with a decorator’s blade and whilst large chunks do come off there are also large areas that are really stubborn and won’t budge and would only come off by also removing a thin layer of the slate surface. The roofer recons that this might be a problem in that the uneven surface caused by the patchy tanerisation, either scraped off or flaked off naturally, when turned to face the batten may prevent the slate from laying flat thereby causing raised lips and ripples in the finished roof. Not all the slates have a perfect ding anyway, a good few have the dud sound. I think maybe my best bet is to disregard these and plug for a set of untanerised reclaimed slates.

I would be wary also of using anything less than sound - replacing them won't be easy. I had a small roof (an offshot) re-roofed and some of the slates were a little bit flaky but seemed OK, once back on they have started to flake more.
Sticking stuff on slates other than lime mortar is a very bad idea I think of all those roofs with spray foam which won't be able to have the slates easilyre-used in future.

Ermmm, you can't flip slates over and use the other side because the way they are struck leaves a bevel on the top face which sheds water.

If the holes are central, they can be top and tailed.
