Attached is a photo of a beam in the kitchen. As the kitchen is due a revamp we thought we would like a blank canvas which will involve the removal of an upright supporting a beam of 95mm x 145mm cross section of some 4.2m length. We would
prefer this upright to go forever but I am unsure as to replacing the current beam with one of a somewhat larger cross section. Is there any rough and ready way of estimating , or guidlines to follow, of what size beam I should aim at. Going back to imperial the current
beam is roughly 6 x 4 now just of the top of my head I said oh well a 9 x 9 will be more than enough. I am probably talking off the top of my head! A structural engineer springs to mind but being a tight northerner diy is my favoured route!!!
