Update on work

Hi All,
Its been a while since my last update. Most of the time has been spent applying 9 coats of lime wash to roughcast render on two large elevations. A herculean job that I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy. No contractor would touch it. The white didn't look right, so its turned brown. The lime wash was colour matched from Masons Mortars. Also, the final coat of linseed oil on the windows was applied just before a tropical downpour. So, that took weeks to clean up and redo. Anyway, I'm almost there now. Just the topcoat of roughcast on the balcony to go (and lime wash.... ). Scaffold should be down within the week.

That's good news Paul. Did you get the leadwork sorted out? Have you a picture of the finial you had made?

Hi Doug,
So, no leadwork has been undertaken. Numerous folks advised that water ingress was most likely through the porous chimney stack. The consensus was that the open unused flues and old exposed brickwork would continue to cause problems. So, I've decided to clean and ventilate the flues over winter. If I get problems,we'll be back up there. Hopefully heating and ventilating will dry it out. The finial is finished and fixed
Again, no lead flashing. This was on the advice of an architectural historian
historian. His view was that a simple timber finial would be most appropriate. And, would likely have received a regular coat of fresh paint to keep it rot free. Photo to follow.
Thanks for all your valuable guidance on the leadwork, Doug! I suspect that I've taken the past of least resistance. Time will tell if this was wise.
