unusual windows

View attachment 1View attachment 2My retirement restoration project is a 400 year old stone and timber framed building with 200 year old extension. It had a Georgian façade and a porch added at some later date. These two windows, which are very similar but not identical are either side of the porch. They are about 12 inches wide and about three foot tall and seem to be hand painted.
Can anyone tell me anything about them? How old would they be? Were they mass produced or are they one-offs? The images seem to be somewhat religious?

Lots more questions to come about other features in the house! We hope to be able to move in next summer. All the tiles are sitting on scaffolding at the moment and my bank balance is quickly reducing!

Yes! Quite near Blists Hill Museum or you may remember it from a previous post about octagonal quarry tiles.

I think the windows are earlier than that though - early 1800s? and not unlike some of the stained glass in Shropshire's surprising number of churches of the same period or a little earlier.

A friend of ours who is into Christianity said it reminded her of this picture ‘vision of the cross’ which hangs in the Vatican. I cannot really see it though.

It is also strange that there is a comma "my,faith" and "my,hope" . What happened to my charity?

My Charity might still be in the church these windows were removed from. Victorians were big on messing around with churches, and it's not unusual for windows removed during Victorian modifications to be used in nearby houses. I reckon the original church windows were shorter, and the coloured panes at the bottom added on to suit the new location.

as the local church is a late-Georgian one designed by Telford, which had its windows replaced with 'cathedral glass' (horrid stuff) in 1909-10, I think an origin there is possible.

I think I need to go and see the vicar! The church is just round the corner. It would be good if I could show that the windows were designed by Thomas Telford. I will look at the other churches in the area that he designed. Perhaps my octagonal quarry tiles came from the church at the same time. I will also see what google has to say.
