Unequal pantile verges

Probably a silly question.... pantiles, one side high, one side low. So, the verges on a double-apex roof run the risk of being fat on one slope and thin on the other, which would look pretty dire.
What's the traditional way of avoiding this?

As to the question regarding the double apex ( ie. left and right end pantiles), the OLD traditional way was to have 2 timber planks, one nailed against the face of the roof elevation slope and the other nailed on top of the previous plank and above the pantiles . This was used primarily for barns though. The modern method is to mortar the under-edge of tiles.

Don't quite understand the 'barn' method, which might have been quite appropriate given we are building what is visually a quasi barn. It's difficult to Google anything pertaining to pantiles, as one finds only modern product information, and well-meaning but practically unhelpful mumblings from Conservation bodies.

As you say, we had intended to mortar the edge, thereby the problem with one edge thick and one thin. This might be avoided if we started by cutting the tiles at the verge so they are a certain depth, but when we get across to the other end, of course the depth there will be a matter of pot luck. Not that it matters visually, as the far edge is visible only to the birds.

However, for this and other reasons I have decided to switch back to plain tiles, and after spending four days sorting through a huge stack of pantiles containing at least 14 different and incompatible types - 'all off one roof, sir' - and lugging 450 of them round here, I am now taking them back and fetching 1500 plain tiles to replace them. Oddly enough, having initially eschewed plains due to the lack of tile & halfs, the yard I am using has a plentiful supply at a very modest price.

Presently, the builders are unbattening the slope we had started pantiling, and rebattening to put up the plains.
We shall get there eventually.

Oh no not at all. I think all this modern groundsmanship overlooks the benefit of a proper shrubbery.

We have various sections of pantile roofs on the house and outbuildings and with a variety of gable details.

This shows the capping board detail that Middi was describing. This example is on the main house so has lead flashing as well.

This shows a similar arrangement on an outbuilding but without any lead flashing:

This shows a mortar detail (complete with frost damage waiting to be repaired ) . . .

The mortar thickness is different because of the way the pantiles ended up of each roof face but it's barely noticeable from the ground unless you really look carefully and even then it doesn't look at all odd.

It's very easy to agonise over tiny details when up a ladder or scaffolding when they won't actually be noticeable at ground level.

It sounded so weird I couldn't believe that was actually how it was, but I see now that it was.

Your ridge is nicely galleted.

Agree about agonising. The peculiarity here is that the garage is about 20 feet from the front, and is front and left in our view. It's 6ft down from the cottage, so the verge with its potential fat/thin situation is around eye level. In yer face, as they say.
The other issue with the pantiles is, or rather was, that being a mix they didn't sit flat like yours. Not as bad as those I pictured on our lean-to in another thread, but not flat, and recalling the recent storms I had visions of them sailing towards the house.... :shock:

We have two styles of pantiles. The flat ones ('French', I believe) are all on the outbuildings but the ones on the house are the more usual rounded ones.

I know exactly what you mean about problems with a mix of pantiles not sitting evenly. Perfect regularity is a good thing with roof tiles but old tiles seem to exhibit quite a range of curve, which can make it frustrating when laying them. The 'French' pantiles do seem to sit much tighter so it's a little odd that they've been used on the less important outbuildings. The house roof has lots of gaps along the sides of the pantiles, but only really driven rain would get between them and even then it doesn't really matter any more now that we have a proper membrane beneath them.

As for tiles being blown off, I know what you mean but we've never had any storm damage and I don't worry about it any more. I suspect it's because pantiles are relatively heavy compared to smaller tiles.

Rummaging for four days through two thousand tiles, I found an amazing variation in curvature, corner profile, width, length, thickness and weight.
I may previously have observed that reputedly makers deliberately exacerbated this situation to exclude competitors from intermixing their tiles.
A hundred years on this makes the sourcing of used pantiles a minefield.

Weight-wise I would not be surprised if there were a 100% spread, and those which predominated in our source stack were the thinnest and lightest. This might explain why the roof from which they came had been repaired so often - I did say there were at least 14 different tile types in the stack - although no doubt the cavalier mix of incompatible replacements aggravated the problem. Copious opportunities for the entrance of water and wind, and instances of nail-holes knocked through with a zax and lime torching and bedding, all pointed to vain efforts at rectification.

As you say, a membrane - Proctor Roofshield, thanks to this forum - does give a certain confidence as to water exclusion on our garage, enabling me to choose 200 yo hand-made plain tiles with a total indifference as to their wonkiness and camber.

there are ( were) hand made pantiles and machine made tiles.
hand made ( older) tiles do not fit together very neat from the same handmade batch, definitely very badly from a separate batch and extremely bad fitting ( or nearly impossible ) when, (as I often found) hand made tiles of different batches have been mixed with machine made, add to this the fact that hand made and machine made tiles are/were of different dimensions and the " fitting" problem becomes even more compound.
On roof restoration jobs the chances are that a visit to the nearest second hand tile supplier is the order of the day and from my experience I have yet to buy a batch of tiles where a few were not of the same batch. the best way is to take a representative sample to check and compare against any second hand purchase you make.
