It's been enjoyable finding various newspaper articles and other items during the building work here. Almost every alteration seems to have been accompanied by a piece of newspaper packed in to fill a void and has left a useful record of when various changes were made.
Here is a front page from 1937 found under a window board in a room we would have expected to have shutters. The story from the previous owner was that the window shutters had been removed to make a door during the war but the paper suggests this might not be the case... Interesting topics making the front page.
The dreadful cement repointing looks to have taken place in 1971 if a newspaper article, found padding a void around a window, is to be believed. This absolves the previous owner who I had suspected of carrying this out!!
Elsewhere, a 1980s Daily Mirror highlighting a falling out between Princesses Diana and Anne confirms a flat roof was replaced by a sloping roof over a WC. There was even a Christmas card from 1911 behind a fireplace and a plasterer's hawk from the time the house was built in another void filled with builders waste.
It gets one thinking what else others have found during work on their properties.
