type of coal for aga

My window cleaner has moved into an old cottage which has a 1960's coal fired aga.

His local "person", (don't know who) has been supplying him with those smokeless briquettes to run it.

Somebody else said not to use those, and use normal coal instead.

Who is right? What is the best coal to use?

He may be in a 'smokeless fuel' area where the local authority has banned coal fires.

If not, I would recommend 'proper' coal....in my experience it is cheaper than the briquettes and gives the same effect.

One possible advantage of the briquettes is reduced ash (meaning less cleaning out)

I seem to remember that there is an issue with the smokeless fuels around either heat or corrosive gasses.

Several of the companies selling flue liner say that the standard grade is fine *unless* smokeless fuel is used, in which case the higher grade is needed.

I'm not talking single or double skin or class 1 class 2, but the grade of steel used in the flue. 316 vs 904 /I think.
