In case you don't know, there's a new series of Restoration starting on BBC2 at 9.00 pm tonight (Fri 28 July).

Following that, on BBC4 at 10.00pm, Ptolemy* Dean is doing a programme that searches for the ideal village.

Sounds like a goggle-box night, tonight. :shock:

...and a repeat of Kevin McCloud in a Grade II Gloucester farmhouse just about to start on More 4, which I missed first time around.

I really liked the old granary/sail loft at Tollesbury (thus betraying my East Anglian bias!). I'd love to live in the building - once it had been jacked up sufficiently to survive the next 30 years of global warming. That should see me out.

I used to crew for a pal who had a boat at Tollesbury. If you got the tide wrong, you just had to sit there with a G & T or six until you had sufficient water under you to get over the bar at the entrance to the yacht harbour. A peaceful summer sunset over the mud flats was just magical.

I quit liked the " granary" as well Penners

I suspect they would need some pretty high stilts if is likely to survive for the next 100 or so years.

I would have got more exited if it was on "Terra firma".

Quite agree about the granary, even though I've not been within 50 miles of the place! The discussion on the history of the construction was interesting even if it had me shouting at the tv about the mixed styles of cladding which were surely the most obvious indicator of an alteration to the upstairs!

Of the three on the programme, it was also the most realistic in terms of funding - £250,000 to save the building seems good value. The arts & crafts gallery is overly ambitious in looking for someone to top up their endowment fund by £2m as well as the building repairs - but is also in a different league in terms of national importance and ability to raise funds on a different playing field.

And as for the folly, well can we just say I am glad its not in my village!

Phew me too that poor little thatched cottage opposite the Folly - the old dear who lived there must have had a coniption when that great ugly thing steadily grew and grew!

I too thought the Granary was beautiful and rather romantic.

But I have to say the Arts and Crafts Gallery got my vote - I thought it truly amazing - all those gorgeous green tiles on the outside and those wonderful paintings oh and the doors - what I wouldn't give to have doors with hinges and designs like those......ah me.

Marianne and Ptolemy are great ......such enthusiasm....... infectious.
