Tuck pointing in lime putty - I came across this video by accident.

It's interesting to watch, a real craft I think, he almost makes it look easy.

I wouldn't say that I have ever seen this anywhere - on what age of house is it traditional? It looks a bit Arts & Craft to me

Certainly takes away my excuse for mistakes: "it adds character". No room for mistakes there (but could have done without the music).

Known as ' a poor mans gauged brickwork' was dropped from the apprentice training in the 50's. One of the most boring jobs in the trade, done by specialists nowadays.
For high class work you need a few labourers to hold a 6ft straight edge for you.

Surprisingly common on buildings of the late 18th / early 19th century, when you look for it. What usually happens though is that the white putty falls out leaving just the red, and then a couple of hundred years later Mr Bodger comes along and repoints it all really badly.
