we are having a new oak staircase fitted
any suggestions as to how we should treat it as it will be getting a fair amount of wear.
Wax? Or will this need much maintenance and careful treatment?
Oil?
Polyeurethane?
Any advice/experiences gratefully received

From personal preference I would use bees wax if I wanted the natural grane in the wood to have a bit of sheene and keep the dust at bay, let it gracefully age with regular application.
I've no idea what wood my staircase is made of, but nine years ago (pre PPUK) having stripped off all the paint+stain+adhesives I slapped on a couple of coats of Danish Oil and haven't touched it since. It looks ok (to my eyes at least, but then I do have low standards), has survived our daughter's teenage friends, and has never been slippery.
