Totally OT - Square dishes

This is totally off topic but I know quite a few of you have dishwashers and I need to ask a question.

But first....how on earth did I manage without a dishwasher for so long?! :lol: I'm totally spoilt now! I'm sure I'll think the world has ended if it ever breaks down :shock: :wink:

Anyway, hubby has this idea that he wants a square dinner service for everyday use; an idea which I hate with a passion and I'm trying to think of every reason not to have one! I'd much prefer something old fashioned (but still dishwasher safe :lol: ). So, it occurred to me that square dishes might not stack in the dishwasher :idea: Would this be right? If so, it would seem to be the ultimate reason not to have a square dinner service

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but my dishwasher takes square dinner plates ok.

Yes. Just like the round plates. You need to make sure that they're not big enough to interfere with the spinning thingy that squirts the water up onto the stuff on the upper shelf (if you see what I mean!)

Just tried a square one in our dishwasher and it fits a treat!

So I'm afraid that excuse won't wash! Or will wash, or...whatever!

Tell him that the corners always get chipped off. I have no idea if they do, but it's the best I can manage that sounds in any way plausible :lol:

With stone floors and wet hands it shouldn't take you long to have sufficient "accidents" when loading/emptying the dishwasher to see off a set of plates that you don't like and move onto the reserve set that you happen to have handy!

That argument wouldn't work with me. I would simply regard it as another argument in favour of the square plates.

"Chipped corners, dear? Why, that's wonderful! Then all we'll have to do is chip off the other corners to match, and we'll have a new dinner service with round plates."

Just tell him that square dinner plates are naffer than a naff thing, and that anyone who isn't oriental who uses them is condemned for eternity to shop at Primark and Matalan (if they're lucky and can raise their game).

I know that times are a bit tough at the moment but to deny your other half the chance of a " square meal" is taking things too far. :wink:

I think square plates are much more practical than round ones. You can fit more on them for a start, you can separate your food better rather than try and cram it all on a round plate and you can pull them right up to your tummy for that messy gravy meal that normally ends up on your knees.
Also , and most importantly ,when you and your other half are having as domestic , they hurt more when you throw them at eachother.

Is he intending on having square cups or mugs? I drank out of a square glass once and it was weird.

You could also tell him you are planning on inviting a group of visually impared people round for a meal on a regular basis. I believe it is easier for them to eat from round plates as the food can be positioned around the plate at locations like a clock. Meat or Fish at 8o'clock, vegetables at 4 o'clock. It wouldn't be as easy to do this on a sqaure plate. Sorry thats all I can come up with.

Square plates will fit in your cupboards better than round ones.

From an environmental perspective square plates take less fuel to transport because you can fit more of them in a lorry, less packaging. so , square plates save the planet.
