Writing is most certainly not a profession. It's a trade, and can be a very fine one at that.

And what is wrong with the notion of trade anyway? If we have any care for period properties, we should be celebrating the tradesmen who built them and denigrating the undoubtedly "professional" architects and lawyers who threaten them!
