Visited Salzburg last week. The catholic Prince Archbishops who ruled the place until Napoleon came along were a strange lot. One built an entire palace for his mistress and 15 children.
When looking round the Residenz - their main palace where the young Mozart performed - many of the interiors struck me as being inappropriately decorated. The whole place was sacked by the French at the start of the 19th C but the ceiling paintings plasterwork etc are mostly intact and other furniture was installed later by the Hapsbergs. Far too much bright white paint I think. No expense seems to have been spared on maintaining the place, so why could they not get it right? Perhaps it was all white, but I somehow doubt it.
