I'd appreciate your advice. We used a roofer recommended by our chimney sweep. He was meant to be doing a 2 part job. First part remove cowl from chimney pot so sweep could get rid of birds nest. Thats been done. Second part, come back and place bird guards on chimney pots, remove foliage from one other stack, and a couple of other little jobs. . He hasn't come back, he has excuse after excuse ( can't get messages off my phone, didn't want to go on your roof without your permission - he had my permission etc etc etc - he was going to come today but hasn't). Stupidly I agreed to let him eave his ladder on my roof. Can you tell me what a fair price would be to climb onto one roof and remove a cowl ( I think he was there less than an hour) so I can tell him where to go and what are my chances of getting someone else to remove the ladder. Thanks. Oh and if anyone else wants a roofer in Plymouth I am happy to tell you who to avoid.

He's left his ladder on your roof? That's sounds like a good indication that he intends to return - otherwise you've got yourself a free ladder.

Put what you want done, what has been done, etc etc then what you want him to do about this now, in writing and send it recorded delivery so you have proof he received it.
Give him a reasonable time to carry out the work, which is going to be hard with Xmas/New year as so many peple are off for a long time, and say if it isn't complted by this time he will be in breach of contract adn won't be getting paid for any work done, and any costs incurred in removing ladder etc will be billed to him.

Mel - builders undergo extensive training in how to disappear halfway through a job. It's a bit like bishops throwing toys out of Mercedes cars - it's "what they do".

Thanks for thoughts - its been more than 3 months so i think disappearing half way through a job is taking the michael a little bit, i am taking skier- hughes advice, which is very similar to that of trading standards. Sadly i cannot keep the ladder and i have no intention of clambering around on my roof myself to get it!
