Great tits, my wife said. Nowadays it seems wrong to be judgemental.

But the tit she saw was of the pecking variety, and it was pecking at the new linseed paint on one of our windows. It pecked and tugged until it had removed a few strips. Beneath the paint was some new putty, but the putty itself survived unpecked.

Is this a common problem? I have a lot of puttying coming up, not keen to have it assaulted.

Wait until the crows start on it. Seriously. I've seen some almighty damage done by birds, including crows, to putty.

While it is wonderful to have a large colony of House Sparrows using our barns, and the neighbouring farm buildings... They don't half make a mess of fresh putty.

I even trialled a modern mastic type putty in a desperate attempt to speed up some window renovations, avoid bird damage and use water based paint. They ate that too.

I've not noticed putty-worrying by any birds in particular, though I've certainly seen some Great Tits indoors . . .

Magpies love putty too - in a previous life, on a new development, we'd watch the glaziers fit windows on the houses being built around us, then in the evenings we'd watch the local magpie population come and strip the putty out again.

It's another reason why I have given up using putty. Car body filler works much better, sets in minutes, and can be painted straight away.

Rooks!, they also eat putty, I have to place a net over it until painted, I use "Wilco" paint and they seem to leave this alone,They eat from my apple pile and then "rook" all over my car and the washing, on the plus side they clean out my gutters.(auto correct says that should read "apple pie" not "apple pile"!.
