tips on window designs...

hi all,

during the process of my rennovation (i will post some pics) i have a few major joinery tasks. I have the neccessary consent, but the CO needs to a pprove the design and specs.

One job is to put a sash back into a box frame where smobody 'modenised' the window in the 60's.

another job is to change a window into a door, keeping the original mouldings on the frame

the biggest job is to design and have built 10 windows, of which 5 will be box sashes, 5 casement one single door and two sets of double doors.

I have a joiner, a friend of my dads, joinery is a hobby for him and he is very good and more than willing to undertake the work, but i need to take responsibility for the design of the windows and doors.

So, my question is:

any tips on how i go about designing the windows and what do you think i should present to the CO eg samples of wood and the mouldings?

First decide if you are going to recreate an old design - in which case look it up in a book such as Hasluck, Carpentry and Joinery - or if you are going to go for a 21st century creation that looks good in an old building.

I did alot of borrowing from books and the internet when i was trying to come up with plans / drawings etc for the actual windows.

Presumably your going to need planning if not LBC and so will need elevations as well as the plans pics drawings of the windows.

In order to clarify what is and is not acceptable, in terms of design, have you tried your local authority's website? Some have helpful guidance on this.

I appreciate that this doesn't give you the constructional detail that you need in order to actually build the windows, but at least it shows you how they should look. If your friend's dad is a competent joiner, he may be able to interpret the construction from this.

I have planning and LBC, with conditions attached and the design of the joinery is one of the conditions.

Although I appreciate it will cost, can I suggest you contact a conservation architect to draw up the plans and deal with the local authority? It shouldn't be a difficult job for someone who knows what they are doing and might make it all much easier.

i just opened the windows in our front victorian bay (on our georgian house!) for the fisrt time as they had been painted shut, the two centre sashes dont have ropes and pulleys, they have a screw type mechanism to hold the sashes open. Anyone come accross these. They dont appear to be working.

I vaguely remember seeing something like that once, took an eternity of screwing just to get some air.
