timber framed building and insulation....

the last thread was hijacked so....

...i spoke with my CO and he was happy with the idea of building peirs and stopping joists just short of the wall and he was happy for me to go ahead and remove the plaster to carry out the repair....

next dilema.....

...my dad, who has no concept of the resoration of listed buildings has suggested i insulate the void between the studwork as currently there is exterior lime render on laths, studwork/void, interior plaster on laths..

my thinking is thant any insulation will interfere with the buildins breathing and thus harbour moisture and just make all the wood rot again.

am i right and my dad daft or the other way round?

You could use breathing insulation such as Thermafleece.

thanks, would that avoid any moisture build up?

I guess as the whole structure is made of wood i want to avoid the chance of any of it rotting in the future!!!

try warmcell blown recycled paper insulation.

I cant answer your q but I know insulation without vapour barrier is liable to produce condensation and get soggy. Paper insulation would thus be inappropriate for this one.

This may help.

The problem is that installing a damp-proof membrane is going to be very destructive to original fabric, as would installing Thermafleece. Whereas Warmcel can be blown in through a hole in each cavity.

Andrew is a CO, so he'll know what he's talking about. However, if you're worried about using the product without a membrane, why don't you give the manufacturers a call and discuss the matter?

I thought in this case the lath and plaster was being removed for other work. That's why I thought Thermafleece might be OK.

(I'd retain as much lath and plaster as poss too...)

i will be removing the plaster from the ground up to about 3 feet, I was thinking that it may be worth insulating this area with thermafleece rather than nothing at all.

There is currently no dpc and i dont intend on installing one unless i have to replace the soleplate....

It is my intention to retain as much of the original fabric as possible, i spoke to my co today and he was quite happy with my plans

I think that there may be a suitable clay board type product which could be used; or, wattle and daub could be introduced...... that is if the frame can take it; some 18th and 19th c framed buildings were of very thin scantling and merely lath and plastered on external and internal faces..... or AND I AM THINKING ALOUD! - could a loose fill leca/vermiculite etc etc be used if there are no holes??
